Can men's hair dye cover women's grey hair? It's a question I had to answer for myself after discovering Cameleo Men Hair Colour Cream in shade 3.0 Dark Brown.

As someone with perimenopausal hair and increasingly noticeable grey roots, I'm always interested in finding hair colour products that can give me reliable grey coverage without unnecessarily compromising the condition of my hair.

So when I came across Cameleo Men Hair Color Cream 3.0 Dark Brown, I was intrigued. The product is marketed for colouring men's hair, beards and moustaches — but does that mean women can't use it?

I decided to put it to the test on my own hair.

Can women use men's hair dye?

The simple answer is that a product being marketed towards men doesn't automatically mean that women can't use it.

Hair colour products marketed towards men are often designed around particular colouring needs, such as covering grey hair quickly and achieving a natural-looking result. But hair is hair — what really matters when choosing a colour product is the formulation, shade, application instructions and, importantly, whether it is suitable for your particular hair.

That doesn't mean every men's hair dye will be suitable for every woman.

If you're considering using a men's hair colour product, always read the packaging and manufacturer's instructions carefully, carry out the recommended allergy/patch test and strand test, and consider the current condition of your hair.

For me, the interesting question was much simpler:

Would this particular men's hair dye actually cover my stubborn grey roots?

My Cameleo Men Hair Color Cream review

The product I tested was Cameleo Men Hair Color Cream in 3.0 Dark Brown.

I chose it because I wanted to see how it would perform on my own grey roots rather than simply relying on the claims made on the packaging.

In my YouTube video, I take you through the process from beginning to end, including:

  • Mixing the colour

  • Applying it to my hair

  • Concentrating on my grey roots

  • Processing the colour

  • Rinsing and seeing the initial result

  • Looking at the finished colour

  • Checking the colour again a few days later

  • Considering how my hair felt after colouring

Did Cameleo Men cover my grey hair?

This was the big test.

I have stubborn grey roots, so I wasn't interested in a product that merely disguised them temporarily. I wanted to see whether I could get genuinely effective coverage.

I was also particularly interested in how the 3.0 Dark Brown shade looked once it had settled, rather than judging the colour immediately after rinsing.

Hair colour can look quite different once you've washed and styled your hair and given the colour a little time to settle.

I show the results in detail in my video, including a check-in a few days after colouring.

If you're considering trying a men's hair dye to cover your own grey hair, I'd recommend watching the full review before buying so you can see exactly how it performed on my hair.

Why I'm interested in men's hair dye for grey coverage

If you're regularly colouring grey roots, you'll know how frustrating it can be.

You can spend a lot of money on permanent hair colour, root touch-up products and salon appointments — only to find yourself looking at those tell-tale silver or grey hairs again surprisingly quickly.

For women in midlife, there can also be additional considerations.

Many of us are dealing with hair that has changed over time. Perimenopause and menopause can coincide with changes in hair texture, thickness, dryness and overall condition.

That means I'm increasingly interested in products that don't simply deliver a cosmetic result but also fit into a realistic haircare routine.

For me, the ideal grey coverage product needs to tick several boxes:

  • Effective grey coverage

  • A natural-looking colour

  • Easy application

  • A result that lasts reasonably well

  • Minimal unnecessary damage to my hair

  • Good value for money

Of course, everyone's hair is different, so what works brilliantly for me may not produce exactly the same result for someone else.

Men's hair dye vs women's hair dye: does it really matter?

This is something I think is worth discussing because the marketing can make it seem as though men and women require completely different hair colour products.

The more important considerations are generally your hair type, starting colour, percentage of grey, desired result and the specific formulation you're using.

A men's hair colour product may be marketed towards men because of the way the brand has positioned it or because of the type of colouring result it is designed to provide.

But that doesn't necessarily mean a woman can't achieve a good result with it.

The important thing is to look beyond the words "men's hair dye" and consider whether the product is appropriate for your own hair and the result you're trying to achieve.

And, as always, follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety guidance.

Other grey coverage products I've tried

Cameleo Men Hair Color Cream isn't the only product I've experimented with when it comes to covering grey hair.

I've also tried and reviewed products including:

These products don't all serve exactly the same purpose.

Some are more suitable for an all-over colour, while others are designed for quick root touch-ups between colouring sessions.

That's why I think it's useful to have a few different options available depending on how much grey you have, how frequently you colour your hair and whether you're looking for a temporary solution or more lasting coverage.

What about caring for your hair after colouring?

Grey coverage is only one part of my haircare routine.

Because my hair has been coloured and processed over time, I try to be mindful of keeping it conditioned and reducing unnecessary damage.

Some of the haircare products I've used and mentioned in my videos include leave-in conditioner, a microfibre hair turban, a gentle detangling brush and silk hair accessories.

These aren't going to magically prevent every hair problem, but small changes to how you handle your hair can make a difference to your overall routine.

I'm particularly conscious of avoiding unnecessary heat styling and being gentle when my hair is wet.

So, would I use men's hair dye again?

Hell to the YES!

Final thoughts

If you're a woman with grey hair, there's absolutely nothing wrong with experimenting with different approaches to finding what works for you.

Whether that's a traditional women's hair dye, a men's hair colour product, a root touch-up spray, a colouring shampoo or simply embracing your grey, the best option is the one that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

For me, the fun is in testing these products honestly and seeing what actually works on real hair — especially when it comes to stubborn grey roots.

And if you've ever wondered whether men's hair dye can cover women's grey hair, hopefully my experiment with Cameleo Men Hair Color Cream gives you another option to consider.
