I Tried the Abbey Yung Method… But Adapted It for Midlife Hair (Oily Roots & Dry Ends)

If you’ve spent any time on haircare TikTok or YouTube, you’ve probably heard of the Abbey Yung Method — a viral routine focused on healthy hair growth, scalp care and damage prevention. But what happens when you’re in midlife, navigating perimenopause, and your hair suddenly has oily roots and dry, over-processed ends?
In my latest video, I break down the Abbey Yung Method and share how I’ve adapted it for perimenopausal hair, hormonal hair changes and midlife texture shifts.
Why the Abbey Yung Method Doesn’t Always Work for Hair Over 40
The original method focuses on:
Scalp oiling
Double cleansing
Strategic conditioning
Protecting hair from damage
And while those principles are excellent, midlife hair can behave very differently.
During perimenopause, many women notice:
Increased oil production at the scalp
Dryness and brittleness at the ends
Changes in texture
More visible damage from past colouring or heat styling
Following a viral routine exactly as demonstrated doesn’t always suit hair over 40 — especially if you’re dealing with oily roots and dry ends at the same time.
How I Adapted the Abbey Yung Method for Midlife Hair
In the video, I explain:
✔️ What the Abbey Yung Method is
✔️ Which parts I kept
✔️ What I modified for perimenopausal hair
✔️ How I balance scalp health without worsening dryness
My focus is on:
Supporting scalp health without overstimulating oil
Repairing over-processed ends
Using bond repair strategically
Creating a routine that works for real midlife hair
Because at this stage of life, it’s less about trends — and more about listening to what your hair actually needs.
Oily Roots + Dry Ends? You’re Not Alone.
This combination is incredibly common during perimenopause. Hormonal shifts can increase scalp oil production while leaving the lengths feeling dry, fragile or frizzy.
If your hair:
Gets greasy quickly at the roots
Feels dry or straw-like at the ends
Has changed texture in your 40s
No longer responds to your old routine
This adapted approach may help you create a balanced haircare routine for midlife women.
If you’re curious whether the Abbey Yung Method could work for your perimenopausal hair — with a few realistic tweaks — I share everything in the full video, including what’s worked for me and what I’ve chosen to skip.
